CLT airport readies for winter weather as American Airlines issues travel waiver

Charlotte Douglas International Airport braces for a winter storm this weekend, advising travelers to check flight statuses amid expected delays.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is preparing for a winter storm expected to hit the region this weekend, urging passengers to verify their flight status before heading to the terminal.

The airport remains open and operational despite the incoming weather, CLT said. However, travelers should expect significant delays and cancellations across the flight network due to weather-related disruptions.

Aviation Department officials said they are maintaining regular communication with airline partners and closely monitoring the forecast. Charlotte Douglas is ready to implement additional operational measures as conditions warrant.

Charlotte Douglas said they have mobilized snow removal teams and a fleet of more than 40 specialized vehicles for snow removal, deicing and maintenance operations.

American Airlines has also issued a special travel exception policy for passengers with flights scheduled Jan. 23 to Jan. 25 due to forecasted winter weather affecting 33 airports, including Charlotte Douglas. The waiver, issued Jan. 20, allows customers with tickets issued on or before Jan. 19 to rebook travel between Jan. 21 and Jan. 28 without change fees.

Passengers affected by canceled or significantly delayed flights may qualify for refunds, according to American. For complete details on rebooking options, affected airports and waiver codes, travelers should visit AA.com or contact American Airlines reservations.

All parking facilities will remain accessible and have been pretreated with deicing materials, CLT said.

Passengers are strongly advised to contact their airlines directly for current flight information before traveling to the airport. Airlines typically provide the most up-to-date details on schedule changes and cancellations.

Information on flight delays and cancellations is available at flightaware.com. Updates on the National Airspace System can also be obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration.
